New Delhi: Maha Shivratri, one of the most important and great festivals of the Hindus, where devotees offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Shakti. Every year Maha Shivratri is celebrated during the Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha, according to the South Indian calendar. However, in the North Indian calendar, the Masik Shivratri is celebrated in the month of Phalguna.

While the Maha Shivratri is celebrated by both  North Indians and South Indians on the same day.

People in Delhi, Mumbai, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata and several other parts of the county will also be celebrating this great festival on February 18.

How to observe fast on Maha Shivratri 2023?

On the day of Maha Shivratri, one must complete morning rituals like bathing and cleaning the house and then take Sankalp to observe full day fast on Shivaratri and to take food the next day. Devotees fast on this day for self-determination and seek Lord Shiva’s blessing before starting anything new.

Devotees should take a second bath in the evening on Maha Shivratri day before doing Shiva Puja or visiting the temple. It is said that Lord Shiva’s should be done during the night and devotees should break the fast the next day after taking bath.

How and When to end Maha Shivratri fast the next day?

All the devotees who will be observing the fast on Maha Shivratri on February 17 should break the fast the next day (February 18) between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi so that they can get the maximum benefit from the Vrat. It is said that one must end their fast between Chaturdashi Tithi.
