New Delhi: Britain is contemplating minting a coin to commemorate the Father of Nation – Mahatma Gandhi.
If and when the proposal to put Mahatma Gandhi’s image on a British coin becomes a reality, it would make him the first non-White person to feature on British currency.
British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has written a letter to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) in this regard and asked to give recognition to individuals from ethnic communities.
In a letter to Zehra Zahidi, Sunak wrote, “Black, Asian and other ethnic minority communities have made a profound contribution to the shared history of the United Kingdom”.
“I am writing today to the Chair of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC), Lord Waldegrave…asking the RMAC Sub-Committee on Themes to consider recognising this very great contribution on our nation’s coinage,” he wrote.
