Mahatma Gandhi’s image may appear on British coins soon

If and when the proposal to put Mahatma Gandhi’s image on a British coin becomes a reality, it would make him the first non-White person to feature on British currency.

New Delhi: Britain is contemplating minting a coin to commemorate the Father of Nation – Mahatma Gandhi.

If and when the proposal to put Mahatma Gandhi’s image on a British coin becomes a reality, it would make him the first non-White person to feature on British currency.

British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has written a letter to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) in this regard and asked to give recognition to individuals from ethnic communities.

In a letter to Zehra Zahidi, Sunak wrote, “Black, Asian and other ethnic minority communities have made a profound contribution to the shared history of the United Kingdom”.

Rishi Sunak“For generations, ethnic minority groups have fought and died for this country we have built together; taught our children, nursed the sick, cared for the elderly; and through their enterprising spirit have started some of our most exciting and dynamic businesses, creating jobs and driving growth”.

“I am writing today to the Chair of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC), Lord Waldegrave…asking the RMAC Sub-Committee on Themes to consider recognising this very great contribution on our nation’s coinage,” he wrote.
