Nupur Sharma and the Prophet controversy
Nupur Sharma, former BJP national spokesperson and noted face on TV channels, went into hiding as she faced serious life threats over her alleged controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammed in a TV show during May end, last year.
During the heated TV debate on disputed Gyanvapi complex, Taslim Ahmed Rehmani made obnoxious remarks on Hindu gods & Hindu faith. Giving a strong counter, Nupur quoted some texts on Prophet Muhammed but that snowballed into a big issue and created furore not just in India but also in the Middle East.
Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubai shared a truncated clip of the TV debate and shared on social media, claiming that the BJP spokesperson was spewing hatred on the Prophet & demonizing Muslims.
Following the global uproar and vociferous protests, the BJP suspended Nupur Sharma for 6 years.
As the video of TV debate went viral, she started receiving death threats for alleged mockery of the founder of Islam. She denied the charges but has been in hiding ever since then.
She also got strong reprimand from the Supreme Court, which said that her ‘loose tongue’ had set the ‘country on fire’.
