PFI ban

New Delhi: Centre’s decision to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates or affiliates or fronts as an unlawful association with immediate effect for a period of five years was well received by the ruling BJP as well as its allies on Tuesday.

Top BJP leaders welcomed the action taken after two rounds of crackdown on PFI and subsequent arrest of activists. Lauding the government’s decision, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he welcomes the move and that the country under the leadership of PM Modi is “decisive and bold”.

Maharashtra Dy CM Devendra Fadnavis told that the GOI has issued a notification regarding the ban and it also gives some power to the states. He assured that the state government will take strong action in cases linked to PFI.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Congress and its coalition partner Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have also welcomed the ban while also calling for a ban on the RSS.

Siddaramaiah, leader of opposition in Karnataka said, “We don’t object to action against anybody who disturbs peace or is against law. RSS & others are also disturbing peace in the same way, action must be taken against them as well, any such organisations must be banned”, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The much demanded ban of PFI has further invited widespread reactions on microblogging site Twitter as #PFIBan trends on top. Netizens are welcoming the move by posting witty and sarcastic memes on various political parties and leaders.
