New Delhi: Baba Neem Karoli, who is also known as Maharaj Ji by his devotee was a devotee of the Hindu deity Hanuman. He believed in and practiced bhakti yoga, and encouraged service to the others-the highest form of unconditional devotion to God.

He was known as a spiritual master to many Americans who travelled to India in the 1960s and 70s,

Baba Neem Karoli Early Life

Baba Neem Karoli was borns as Lakshman Narayan Sharma around 1900 in the village Akbarpur in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district to a wealthy Brahmin family.

He was married at the age of 11 by his parents after which he left home to become a wandering sadhu.

At the request of his father, he returned home to live a settled married life and fathered two sons and a daughter.

In 1958 he boarded a train and was forced to get down at the village ‘Neem Karoli’ as he did not have a ticket. Later he settled in his ashram, building a Hanuman Temple.

He died in a hospital on September 11, 1973, at Vrindavan due to complications after he fell into a diabetic coma.

Recently, Star cricketer Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma visited the Baba Neem Karoli ashram in Vrindavan, Mathura, with their daughter Vamika.

According to reports, Virat and Anushka’s family members are ardent followers of Baba Neem Karoli.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, in September 2015 visited the ashram in Kainchi at a time when Facebook was having a tough time. Later, reports revealed that Apple founder Steve Jobs had suggested Zuckerberg visit the ashram.

Julia Roberts had also earlier mentioned that she was drawn to Hinduism because of him.
