New Delhi: With the veterans of the Indian team Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepping aside, the onus of the captaincy was anticipated to fall on the shoulders of Hardik Pandya. However, as per the latest reports of BCCI and an internal committee led by Ajit Agarkar have decided to pass on the badge of captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav rather than Pandya.

This latest development comes after new head coach Gautam Gambhir took charge as the head coach of the Indian National cricket team. According to cricket experts and pundits, Pandya’s progression to the captaincy role was anticipated to be natural. However, that seems to have hit rock bottom in these recent developments around Suryakumar Yadav.

Why was Surya selected as the forerunner for the captaincy roles?
Now, everyone is wondering why is Suryakumar going into the good books of Gautam Gambhir out of a blue moon. To put it into perspective, Gambhir and Surya have a long history in the IPL circuit. Surya used to play under Gauti during his playing days for the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2014 to 2017.
Furthermore, it is interesting to note that Surya has managed to win the trust of Gautam in the past as well. The Mumbai-based cricketer was even made the vice-captain of KKR. It seems that this belief of Gambhir is one of the main reasons for the Head Coach to entrust the coaching responsibilities on the shoulders of Suryakumar once again.

Talking about the ‘report card’ of Surya in T20Is, the Mumbaikar has so far led the men in blue in 7 T20Is against Australia and South Africa. Against the Aussies, Surya managed to walk off with a victory as India finished the series 4-1. On the other hand, against the Proteas, the men in blue managed to draw the series 1-1 with the last one washed away. Furthermore, Suryakumar has captained his franchise just once and that too in the game against KKR during the IPL 2023. But the question can Surya replace Rohit Sharma as he is likely to take up the mantle of the Indian team?
