Gautam Gambhir vs Rohit Sharma: Are the Indian captain and head coach not on the same understanding?

Within months of taking over the coaching duties of the national team, Gambhir faced the music of the media and former cricketers who have been part of the day-to-day working of the Indian team.

New Delhi: The India cricket team is going through a rough patch currently. After winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian cricket team underwent a drastic change with an overhaul in the coaching staff as well as in the national team. Rahul Dravid who was the former cricket coach of India across red and white ball stepped down from his post. This was followed by the retirement of many senior cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Naturally, there was a major question as to who will take on the reigns of Indian cricket in red ball and white ball. Indian cricket fans across the world wanted Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the national team given the tremendous IPL success that the southpaw got with his team- the Kolkata Knight Riders. Going with the popular mandate, the former BCCI secretary Jay Shah appointed Gambhir as head coach.

However, within months of taking over the coaching duties of the national team, Gambhir faced the music of the media and former cricketers who have been part of the day-to-day working of the Indian team. Although nothing clear has yet been reported about the exact problem, it is clear that the decisions of Gautam Gambhir now are the attention of the critics and scrutinised to the last bit.

The PTI report shows in-fighting between Gambhir and the Indian team…

According to the latest PTI reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted a review of the series defeat on Friday with skipper Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and Gambhir in attendance along with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and president Roger Binny.

Several things were discussed between the stakeholders and a report by PTI claimed that Gambhir and the team think-tank are currently not “on the same page” when it comes to certain decisions regarding the team.

A senior BCCI source who was a witness to the meeting remarked:

It was a six hour marathon meeting which was obviously on cards after such a debacle. India are going on a tour of Australia and the BCCI would obviously like to ensure that the team is back on track and would like to know how the think-tank (Gambhir-Rohit-Agarkar) are going about it

In this environment of mistrust and in-fighting the million-dollar question is can the stakeholders of the Indian team rise above their mutual jealousies and come to a consensus before the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy?
