Mahela Jayawardene is reappointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025

New Delhi: Mahela Jayawardene is re-appointed as the head coach of the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians. The former Sri Lankan skipper was the head coach of the side from 2017 to 2022. Under Jayawardene’s guidance, Mumbai had clinched the title on three occasions 2017, 2019 and 2020-21.

Jayawardene replaced Mark Boucher as the head coach of Mumbai Indians. The former South African wicket-keeper had a two-year stint with the Mumbai Indians. Under Boucher though MI endured a tough phase as they twice finished bottom of the points table while qualifying for the playoffs just once during his three years in charge.

In a press issue released by Mumbai Indians, Mahela remarked-

My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well. Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to…

Mahela Jayawardene is one of the greatest batsmen to come out of the Sri Lankan cricketing system in recent years. The former Sri Lankan cricketer has termed his MI return as “an exciting challenge”. Naturally, a lot of hope will be pinned on the shoulders of Mahela to produce promising results mirroring the success from his previous tenure.
