“Yes, I am retiring from T20I format…”: Riyad Mahmudullah announces retirement from the shortest format of the game

New Delhi: Bangladesh’s all-rounder and white ball specialist, Riyad Mahmudullah has announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game. Mahmudullah’s retirement from the white ball comes against the backdrop of Shakib’s sudden retirement plans post the ongoing India tour.

Talking about his retirement plans, Mahmudullah revealed that-

Yes, I am retiring from T20I format after this series. It was pre-decided. I had discussed it with the board and my family. It’s the right time for me to move on, and I am going to focus on the ODI matches coming up, and it was the right time for the transition…

Mahmudullah will play the last innings in a Bangladeshi jersey in the final T20I of the India vs Bangladesh T20I series. Interestingly, the 38-year-old Bangladeshi all-rounder formed a deadly trio along with Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim. The last time Bangladesh and India squared off in a T20I clash in the national capital dates back to November 3, 2019. The visitors bamboozled the hosts with their all-rounded performance and sailed to a 7-wicket win.

Talking about the 2019 game, Mahumudallah fondly remembers-

The 2019 game was special. It was a great start for us. When I walked into the ground today, I remembered our win, and hopefully, we will put up a great show tomorrow as well…

With the retirement of Mahmudullah, the Bangladesh cricket team is set to lose an inform all-rounder in the form of Mahmudullah. Nevertheless, a lot of hope will be on the shoulders of Mehidy Hasan Miraz who has turned out to be the like-for-like replacement for Mahmudullah.

Mahmudullah’s T20 career

Coming to his T20 Career, Mahmudullah has made 139 T20I appearances for Bangladesh in which he has scored 2,395 runs at a strike rate of 117.74. Simultaneously, the right-hand all-rounder has also claimed 40 wickets courtesy of his foxy off-spin deliveries.
