Elon Musk’s X aims to disrupt LinkedIn, plans job search feature

Elon Musk

New Delhi: Elon Musk’s ambitious vision of an all-encompassing app called X is taking shape, with reports suggesting that the platform is gearing up to challenge established job-search portals like LinkedIn and Naukri.com. This move is aligned with Musk’s goal to transform Twitter into a comprehensive ‘everything app’ similar to China’s WeChat, which offers a multitude of services beyond micro-blogging. Recent developments indicate that X will soon empower its users to search for jobs directly on the platform.

Transitioning Twitter into an All-in-One Solution

The evolution of Twitter into an extensive platform, referred to as X, is a strategic step taken by Musk. The vision for X resembles China’s WeChat, where users can seamlessly accomplish various tasks ranging from financial transactions to booking movie tickets. Recently, it was disclosed that verified organizations on X could post job listings on the platform. These entities are reportedly allowed to list up to five vacant positions.

A recent report by IANS suggests that X is set to introduce a dedicated job search feature. This feature would enable Twitter users to explore and apply for job openings through the platform. According to posts from the X Daily account, dedicated to X-related news, the handle XHiring has already begun sharing job listings. However, currently, these listings are only visible on the web version and are limited to the US.

The XHiring handle is part of the broader plan to integrate job-related services within the X ecosystem. Chris Bakke, the former CEO of job-matching platform Laskie (which was acquired by Twitter in May), hinted at the platform’s intentions to introduce not just job search but also advanced matchmaking capabilities to connect users with suitable opportunities.

Recent Advancements in the X Universe

In a recent move, Twitter made waves by discontinuing its oldest advertising format. As per Axios, Twitter will no longer allow advertisers to directly promote their accounts on users’ timelines. This decision is expected to reshape the company’s advertising dynamics, as the promoted accounts ads business generated more than $100 million globally.

In a communication sent to advertising clients on August 10, a Twitter representative acknowledged the importance of the feature to many advertisers and pledged to explore alternative strategies to achieve the same goals. The eliminated feature, known as the “Followers Objective” ads, had been hailed as an effective method to boost follower counts. This format presented promoted account tweets to users’ timelines, even if they were not following that particular account, with a prominent “Follow” button for easy engagement.

As X continues to expand its services, including the imminent job search feature, it’s becoming evident that Musk’s vision for an all-encompassing platform is gradually materializing, redefining how users engage with social media and online services.
