Germany auction: Mercedes Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut becomes world’s most expensive car

A car made by Mercedes in 1955, the Mercedes Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut won the title of being the world’s most expensive car.

New Delhi: There is a famous phrase that records are made to be broken. Proving it right, a car made by Mercedes in 1955, the Mercedes Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut won the title of being the world’s most expensive car

It happened during a private auction conducted by RM Sotheby’s at the Mercedes-Benz Museum on May 5 where a buyer paid $142 million (approximately Rs 1,108 core) to Mercedes- Benz as the company itself was the owner of the car.

However, the name of the buyer was kept secret while the winning bid was placed on their behalf by Simson Kidston, head of historic car specialist Kidston SA.

Expensive than a Ferrari

The previous record of being the most valuable car in the world was held by a Ferrari 250 GTO. It was sold for about Rs. 503 crore in 2018 which is just half of the price of Rs 1,108.

Talking about the car, Simson said, ”The car is a combination of exotic engineering, all-conquering racing history, the power of the three-pointed star on its nose and the fact that one had never, ever been sold. We won the car’s bid defeating all collectors.”

Notably, the previous record for most expensive cars sold at an auction was also held by the Ferrari 250 GTO.

Two cars build by the company

Reportedly, the company built only two cars of the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupes. One was sold whereas another one was kept by the chief engineer of the company Rudolf Unlenhaut.

It is powered by a 3.0-litre straight-engine, producing the speed of up to 288kph.
