L&T and IIT Bombay are working together to create green hydrogen technologies

India has an aspirational ambition of being net-zero by 2070, and transitioning from fossil fuel to green hydrogen will play an important role.

New Delhi: IIT Bombay and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), an Indian multinational engaged in Construction projects, high-tech production, and services, have inked a contract to collaborate on green hydrogen research & innovation.

Two institutes have combined together to promote India to build its green hydrogen sector and create next-generation technology in this rapidly growing field.

This relationship will be supported by L&T’s engineering expertise, product scale-up and commercialization skills, and IIT Bombay’s reducing innovation in hydrogen technology.

“L&T will always be in the frontline of driving technological improvements and indigenization in India across areas,” noted SN Subrahmanyan, CEO, and MD, L&T. Along with our collaborators, we are ready to lead India’s green hydrogen economy.”

The collaboration will help in developing indigenous globally competitive technologies and nudge India towards green hydrogen technology, says the CEO of the company, Anil Agrawal.

Technology is critical to the development of a new sector like green hydrogen. Research & development in sectors like energy efficiency, reliability, and device cost reduction are essential to improving affordability, and so a large-scale deployment of green hydrogen in India is urgently needed.

Recognizing that, L&T is cooperating with IIT Bombay as an industrial partner to support the expansion of India’s R&D ecosystem and develop skills in the area.

WHY IS GREEN HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGY SO IMPORTANT?

Green hydrogen would help countries like India, with its ever-increasing oil and gas import bill, provide essential energy stability by lowering total dependency on imported fossil fuels.

“India’s National Hydrogen Initiative is a positive step forward, and IIT Bombay’s collaboration with L&T will provide sustainable and cost-effective technologies. India has an aspirational ambition of being net-zero by 2070, and transitioning from fossil fuel to green hydrogen will play an important role.” Chaudhuri remarked.

POLICY ON GREEN HYDROGEN

The central government announced the green hydrogen strategy in February 2022, with the goal of increasing green hydrogen and green ammonia production in order to help the country get to be a global hub for the ecologically benign variant of the molecule.
