New Delhi: In his first feature film as a filmmaker, Jin Ong crafts a neo-noir drama called Abang Adik. In a crime-ridden and impoverished Malaysian neighbourhood, the film follows the plight of two illegal orphans named Abang and Adik, a deaf man and his dishonourable younger brother.
When it came out, Abang Adik was well-received by critics who praised the script, plot, and performances of the main characters. Wu Kang-ren won Best Actor at the Golden Horse Awards, while the film received seven other nominations.
The premiere of this highly acclaimed film is scheduled to take place on June 14 exclusively on Netflix.
Plot
Some foreign migrant workers in Kuala Lumpur’s Pudu district have lost their status and are fighting for survival every day. The older brother, Abang, who is deaf and mute, refuses to let anything stand in his way of achieving a secure existence. Adik, his younger brother, protests their situation and turns to criminal activities in pursuit of a future away from Pudu.
With the support of social worker Jia En, the two abandoned brothers depend on one another daily while they seek proper identification. Their aspirations of climbing the social ladder are shattered by an unforeseen event just as their luck seems to be turning. The delicate equilibrium of their relationship is thrown off by a terrible catastrophe.
The film’s striking portrayal of the difficult lives of migrant labourers without proper documentation is based on real-life events and social headlines. Amidst depicting the two brothers’ bleak circumstances, the film brings attention to the neglected positions in Malaysian society.
