New Delhi: Netflix is gearing up to launch the international premiere of Amar Singh Chamkila, which stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur were a popular Punjabi pop duo, and their lives are the subject of a biographical film directed by Imtiaz Ali.
In 1988, Chamkila, his wife Amarjot Kaur, and two members of their band were reportedly assassinated. The film follows their rise from modest origins to the height of their fame. Skipping the theatrical release by its producers, the film – Amar Singh Chamkila will shortly make its debut on the most prominent streaming behemoth.
Plot
This biopic chronicles the lives of the legendary 80s singing duo Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur, whose songs served as both social commentary and devotionals.
The film follows Amar from his modest origins to his rise to fame and the adoration of his supporters. In carving out a special place for himself, he met his love, Amarjot Kaur, who became his singing partner. He became the best-selling artist in Punjab because of his unwavering conviction in himself and his abilities, which are shown in the film.
However, he with his wife and two other band members was assassinated, after he was allegedly the target of public criticism for his lyrics.
