Plot
The film follows Anora “Ani” Mikheeva, a 23-year-old stripper residing in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn—a neighborhood known for its Russian-American community. Ani’s life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Ivan “Vanya” Zakharov. He is the 21-year-old son of a wealthy Russian oligarch.
Ani is introduced to Vanya through her employer. Vanya, in the U.S. ostensibly for studies, prefers indulging in parties and video games at his family’s Brooklyn mansion. He hires Ani for several encounters and eventually offers her $15,000 to spend a week with him. During a trip to Las Vegas, Vanya proposes to Ani, suggesting that marriage would allow him to obtain a green card and avoid returning to Russia to work for his father.
Despite initial skepticism, Ani is convinced of Vanya’s professed love, and they impulsively marry at a Vegas chapel. Following the wedding, Ani quits her job and moves into Vanya’s mansion.
The news of their marriage reaches Russia, prompting Vanya’s parents to intervene. They dispatch Toros, Vanya’s Armenian godfather, along with his associates, to annul the union. A confrontation ensues at the mansion, leading to a series of events where Ani’s resilience and determination are tested. Throughout the night, Ani and the group search for Vanya across Brooklyn, culminating in a courtroom encounter where the annulment is dismissed due to jurisdictional issues.
Ultimately, under pressure from Vanya’s powerful family and recognizing the challenges ahead, Ani agrees to the annulment.
The film concludes with Ani reflecting on her experiences, highlighting themes of love, power dynamics, and self-discovery.
