New Delhi: The life and career of the legendary Amy Winehouse are chronicled in the biographical film Back to Black. Named after Winehouse’s 2006 smash hit album—her second and last studio album before her tragic death in 2011—the biographical drama film is set to premiere in 2024. At the 2008 Grammys, the album Back to Black received five awards for its excellent reception from critics.
Monumental Pictures and StudioCanal collaborated to create the film after the Winehouse family inked an agreement with them. The biopic Back to Black is based on the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse and was written by Matt Greenhalgh and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Marisa Abela plays the lead role in the film.
The biopic mostly centres on Winehouse’s ascent to stardom, but it also portrays her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, who had a huge influence on her music, especially her Grammy-winning record Back to Black.
This picture has already opened in theatres throughout the United Kingdom in April, and now it’s preparing for a May 17th release in the US theatres and an OTT debut.

Plot
The film follows Amy Winehouse as she grows from adolescence into adulthood and writes and records one of the most successful albums of all time.
Beginning with her time spent living on Camden streets and practising guitar, the trailer follows Amy as she rises through the ranks of North London jazz and eventually becomes a famous and prolific singer-songwriter.
In addition to chronicling her sad life and epic love story, the biopic focuses on her trailblazing 2011 album Back to Black, which went on to sell over 16 million copies globally and became the UK’s second best-selling record of the 21st century.
The trailer skilfully follows Amy Winehouse’s rise to fame and subsequent fall from grace, culminating in her tragic 2011 death. Her emotional journey, detailed in Back to Black, was filled with highs and lows, love, and loss, and culminated in a musical and mystical burst with the album.
When and Where to Watch?
U.S. moviegoers will have to wait until May 17, 2024, to see Back to Black in theatres, after it premiered in the UK on April 12, 2024.
Following its US debut, fans may look forward to digital rentals or purchases via OTT services. There have been rumblings of an OTT release on Peacock, but neither the platform nor the date have been officially announced.
