New Delhi: If movie theatres were looking to spice up their summer, the intense exciting ‘Barbenheimer’ box office war over the weekend was a winner. According to Warner Bros. on July 23, Barbie raked in an estimated $155 million in U.S. and Canadian theatres over the weekend, making it the highest opening of 2023.

It is the fourth time in history that domestic ticket sales for all movies have surpassed $300 million in the United States and Canada. Studio estimations suggest that Barbie brought in $155 million of that total, while Oppenheimer took $80.5 million.

Studios and theatres US that had been struggling through a lacklustre summer were given a boost by the final tally. Despite more movies being released this year, box office receipts have been stagnant. Studios planned 30 per cent more films to be released this summer than they did last year, so the expectations were high. But, unfortunately, summer 2023 box office revenues were running roughly 7% lower than 2022 by mid-July. Tom Cruise’s newest Mission: Impossible released to lukewarm reviews, while The Flash bombed at the box office. But now Barbie and Oppenheimer have combined to significantly boost domestic ticket sales for the summer and become the rising hope for the market.

This weekend saw Greta Gerwig’s Barbie break records as the year’s top-grossing film and the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman director. It was more successful than ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ launched in April. Mattel Inc., the company responsible for the Barbie brand, went all out with a worldwide marketing campaign to fuel the craze, including illuminating landmarks in London pink and forming hundreds of product partnerships. The global gross for Barbie became $337 million.
