New Delhi: Captain Miller, Dhanush’s newest film directed by Arun Matheswaran, has been generating buzz for some time. The movie premiered today, January 12, 2024, and it has an ensemble cast that includes, among others, Shivarajkumar, Sundeep Kishan, Nassar, and Aditi Balan.

Plot

The outlaw Miller is the protagonist of Captain Miller, a crime drama set in the 1930s and 1940s that chronicles his violent thefts, assaults, and looting. This is the story of Analeesan, a young man from a poor hamlet who rose through the ranks to become Miller, a sepoy in the British-Indian Army and, later, an infamous dacoit known as Captain Miller.

When a hopeless man must decide between his desires and the well-being of his town, he is compelled to reconsider his rogue behaviour. The film also explores the period’s active liberation movement.

Review

Captain Miller’s narrative is unique and stands out from the usual British India accounts. A man’s never-ending quest for self-discovery lies at the heart of this narrative. A man’s traumatic experiences, rather than his beliefs, motivate him to lead the fight against the oppressor in Captain Miller.

Director Arun Matheswaran has perfected the use of spare aesthetics to striking effect. He wisely chose to film across desolate landscapes, amplifying Western genre aspects, rather than spend billions replicating the buildings of British India.

As he channels Analeesan and Captain Miller’s anguish and suffering into his portrayal, Dhanush brings a raging fury to the storey. Even though Dhanush steals the show, Arun ensures that every character gets their turn on screen.

Despite taking place during the British Raj, the ideas, concepts, and concerns explored in Captain Miller seem very present and relevant today.
