New Delhi: On May 10, the true crime documentary Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering The Story Of César Román examines the case of a Spanish chef who was implicated in a murder. César Román’s career was based on a succession of fraudulent identities, and this three-part documentary highlights that case.

Anyway, his culinary career was severely disrupted in November 2018 upon his arrest for the murder of Heidi Paz.

About the Documentary

This crime documentary explores a murder case that involves the notoriously secretive and multi-identity Spanish chef César Román.

In November 2018, restaurateur Román, who was renowned as the king of cachopo—a delicacy from the Asturias area in northern Spain that resembles a cordon bleu—was apprehended for the murder and mutilation of his Honduran lover Heidi Paz, who was 25 years old. Following these horrific atrocities, he rushed away from Madrid and, under a fake name, found employment at a restaurant in Zaragoza. After a three-month countrywide search, the police finally caught him there. There was widespread media coverage of Román’s trial in Spain, which ended in a guilty conviction in 2021.

The Murder Case of Heidi Paz

When Heidi Paz began working at the cider business that César Román operated in Madrid in April of 2018, they met. Their romance blossomed quickly, and they eventually moved in together. On the other hand, Paz left him a message explaining her departure from the residence in June of that year because she started to doubt their relationship.

Before returning, she made another attempt to get in touch with him on August 5. After that, Román rushed away from Madrid and started working as a restaurant worker in Zaragoza, Spain, under a false identity.

According to the reports, Román murdered her, then chopped her body into pieces and placed the pieces in a suitcase. Before his conviction in 2021, Román’s trial received widespread media attention across Spain.

He said throughout the trial that he was innocent and that his ex-girlfriend was either still alive in Honduras or had been murdered by a suspected drug gang.

After a majority guilty decision, Román received a 15-year jail term, and that is exactly what he is now serving. The victim’s mother and children were also ordered to receive approximately €250,000 in compensation from him.
