Faraway Downs OTT Release: “Faraway Downs” is a six-part limited series directed by Baz Luhrmann, serving as an extended and reimagined version of his 2008 film “Australia.”
The series offers adventure, romance, and historical drama, providing a fresh take on the original film’s narrative. Faraway Downs will be premiering soon on the streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar. No streaming date has been finalized yet.
Plot
The story begins in 1939 when Lady Sarah Ashley, an aristocratic Englishwoman, travels to Northern Australia to confront her wayward husband, who owns a sprawling cattle ranch called Faraway Downs.
Lady Sarah is intent on selling the ranch, which she sees as an unwanted responsibility. However, upon her arrival, she finds her husband murdered under suspicious circumstances.
Following her husband’s death, Lady Sarah discovers that the ranch is on the brink of financial collapse and is under threat from King Carney, a powerful and ruthless cattle baron who seeks to take control of Faraway Downs. To save the ranch, Sarah forms an unlikely partnership with The Drover.
The Drover is a rugged and independent cattleman known for his no-nonsense attitude and skill with livestock. Together, Lady Sarah and The Drover undertake the monumental task of driving 2,000 head of cattle across the unforgiving Australian outback to Darwin, where they hope to sell the herd and keep the ranch afloat.
Along the way, they face immense challenges, including natural disasters, hostile competitors, and their growing attraction to one another.
True to Baz Luhrmann’s style, Faraway Downs combines sweeping cinematography, vivid visuals, and grand emotional arcs. The Australian landscape becomes a character in its own right. With the breathtaking shots of the outback, cattle herds, and stormy skies.
The series also delves into the historical and cultural fabric of 1930s and 1940s Australia. This makes it as much a historical drama as a personal one.
An iconic duo, to say the least.
