New Delhi: Recently, the Hindi film industry is exploring some genres that are less talked about including the hardships of widows. The directors try to bring forth not only the challenges faced by the widows but also the way they overcome them. India being a patriarchal society still condemns the thought of a widow spending living happily ever after.

From pale colour garments to restrictions in participating in an event, widows are made to look helpless without their husbands. In recent times, directors have touched the sensitive theme and brought an eye-opening site to the audience.

We have compiled some of the best movies that focus on the helpless expectations and stereotypes faced by women and how they achieved their ambitious dreams and desires.

1. The Last Color – Amazon Prime

The movie shows the societal prejudice faced by minorities and talks about friendship that has no bounds. The film touches on different sectors including a woman is a widow who is restricted to enjoying her life which seemed to be colourless, a nine-year-old flower seller who is ambitious, bright, and friendly, and a trans woman who is wrong every time but bears it whole-heartedly to protect her nine-year-old from dangers. The movie is directed by Vikas Khanna.

2. Pagglait – Netflix

This 2021 movie was one of the most progressive and practical films that focuses on a subject like widows and the life after the death of their husbands. Sanya Malhotra played the lead role where she was seen in a character of a widow named Sandhya. The story narrates how Sandhya lost her husband five months after their marriage however she did not mourn the death as society expects her to do. Her carefree and ambitious nature even irked those around her but she ends up doing what she liked and wants.

3. Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi – JioCinema

The 2019 film was critically acclaimed due to the storyline, screenplay, and performances of the actors. The movie focuses on the drama that happens in every house after the death of the head of the family, Bauji. Seema Pahwa’s directorial raises questions and dilemmas about the property and possession and also who will take the responsibility of Bauji’s widow and mother of the children, Amma.

4. Is Love Enough? Sir – Netflix

Directed by Rohena Gera, the film focuses on the forbidden love between the maid and her employer. Ratna, a widow who is independent works hard to run her family, and is under is employed as a maid in Mumbai under the house of Ashwin, a New York return. However, after Ashwin is cheated by his would-be wife, he is consoled by Ratna, for whom he falls in love.

5. Qarib Qarib Singlle – Zee5

The 2017 romantic movie touches the heart of the audience and is one of the few light-hearted films on widows. The movie features Irrfan Khan and Paravathy Thiruvothu in lead roles. The movie narrates how a widow policy insurance manager meets a guy on a dating app and then goes on a world tour with the latter to meet his ex-girlfriends and eventually they both fall in love during the journey.
