Javed Akhtar criticizes remixing old classic songs with rap

Javed Akhtar, the veteran lyricist, expresses his strong views on the trend of remixing old classics.

New Delhi: Javed Akhtar, the veteran lyricist, expresses his strong views on the trend of remixing old classics. During a conversation on Cyrus Says, he states that the actual act of reviving a song is not the issue itself. Rather, it is the commercial aspect associated with it that leaves a negative impression. He further compares such practices to the absurdity of including ‘disco music in Taj Mahal’.

Javed Akhtar on Remixing Old Classics

During a recent conversation with Cyrus Says, Javed Akhtar expressed his thoughts on the trend of remixing old classics. He stated, “Remembering the past, giving it significance, and attempting to revive it is not wrong at all. In fact, it is commendable. However, relying commercially on the past in this manner is not a healthy attitude. We should at least preserve the dignity of these songs. Taking a song with beautiful lyrics and profound meaning, and then adding bizarre stanzas to it is unacceptable. It is akin to incorporating psychedelic lights in the Ajanta caves or playing disco music at the Taj Mahal. Such actions should be avoided.”

He further emphasized, “These are unforgettable songs created by talented singers, writers, and composers. We should respect and preserve this cultural heritage. Reviving these songs is acceptable, even if someone else sings it with a new orchestra and arrangement. For instance, if you take a song by (KL) Saigal and have Arijit (Singh) sing it, that is fine. However, adding a rap in the middle of such a song is simply not done.”
