New Delhi: After its theatrical run concludes, from July 27 (today), the OTT distribution of Kolla, starring Rajisha Vijayan and Priya Prakash Varrier, is going to start. Both reviewers and moviegoers had mixed reactions to Kolla, leading to a lacklustre box office performance.

Plot

Annie and Shilpa, two young women, enjoy the early support of their community when they start a beauty parlour in their village. But then something happens that sets off a dangerous game of cat and mouse, and they have to go on an adventurous journey just to get out of the trap.

Review

Heist films, especially ones with a rural setting, are quite rare in Malayalam cinema. Kolla, directed by newcomer Suraj Varma, is an excellent contribution to the genre. The script by Jasim Jalal and Nelson Joseph is good, with no unnecessary padding. The film’s brisk pace is helped along by the editing. There are some fantastic sequences in the movie as well.

However, the filmmakers don’t quite etch their characters, and with the exception of Basil, not even the protagonists are developed. The storyline suffers from a serious deficiency: it lacks character development, which prevents the reader from connecting with the main characters.

Rajisha Vijayan, Vinay Forrt, and their co-stars provide excellent performances in Kolla, making the most of the material they are given. Despite, quite an okay performance Priya Prakash received some mixed responses.

While Shaan Rahman’s score does not quite fit throughout the film’s shaky first act, it works well in the more rapid second half.

As a whole, a deeper screenplay would have made the film more exciting. But a single viewing is sufficient for the film.
