Review

Mansion 24, filmmaker Ohmkar’s debut on OTT, continues his experimentation with the horror genre by taking inspiration from the first instalment of his successful horror series, Raju Gari Gadhi.

The horror components are cleverly packaged to hide the bigger reality, and the series is chock full of subplots to divert attention. The idea behind Mansion 24 is intriguing and spicy.

The filmmaker lays the groundwork for the audience’s emotional investment in the plot during the first episode. The main character has a compelling reason to visit the mansion; she must locate her father and clear his name.

The series’ premise is clever, and the episodic structure works well for the story. The director portrays our inner demons and how our choices might put us in danger even in the film’s side storylines.

Ohmkar has difficulty putting his thoughts into digital form, however. There is zero innovation in the technological implementation. Characters are sketchy, and plot points seem lifted straight from other horror movies.

Due to the rushed editing, the filmmaker is unable to properly establish his characters or engage the audience. The last episode quite saves the series, but the easy ending lets them down.

The characters of Rajeev Kanakala and Abhinaya are particularly compelling since they show the powerlessness of a mother trying to save her unhappy family. The story would fall apart without the charisma of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Rao Ramesh.

The cinematography is the highlight, but the series’ predictable plots don’t provide the professionals with much room to shine. The narrative and character development are flat, and there is no meaningful connection between the audience and the plot.
