Released in theatres on July 21 and directed by Pratik Moitro, the Hindi crime thriller Minus 31: The Nagpur Files plays up the suspense and tension often associated with closed-room murder mysteries.

Plot

A murder occurs in Nagpur at the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic. A female officer has been tasked with the inquiry; she faces difficult professional and personal circumstances. Despite all the obstacles in her way, she perseveres in her search for the truth. This mystery crime drama deals with themes of bravery, perseverance, and family.

Review

The movie benefits greatly from the excellent work of its star performers. As the primary investigator, Rucha Inamdar is a fascinating blend of tenacity and openness. Her depiction of a dedicated police officer with her own set of problems brings her character down to earth. Nisha Dhar’s performance in her role, which added a lot of nuances to the movie, was also a major factor. Raghubir Yadav is fantastic as a jaded ex-cop with a dark past. The sequences in which he interacts with Inamdar are among the film’s most interesting. Other co-actors also did a great job of bringing their characters to life as well.

Pratik Moitro’s directing is excellent, particularly in the way it builds suspense and tension. The film’s cinematography, the visuals, do an excellent job of capturing the unsettling atmosphere of the town under lockdown, making effective use of shadow and light to heighten the sense of tension. The score and music of the film are consistent with its visual style.

While there are many things to like in the film there are also some drawbacks. It may be argued that the resolution was hastily put together, and a stronger emphasis on closure would have left a stronger overall impression.

But the film’s clever plotting, excellent acting, and expert directing make it a must-see for the audience.
