New Delhi: On July 21, 2023, theatres throughout the globe started premiering ‘Barbie,’ starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer.’ The anticipation for both films was high since their promo had debuted.

At the Indian box office, Barbie debuted with figures that are satisfactory. Early estimates suggest that the comedy film based on the well-known Mattel dolls has brought in a total of 5 crores. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is competing at the box office with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which generated Rs. 13.50 crore on its first day of release in India. According to a report that was in Sacnilk, 16,000 tickets for the film ‘Barbie’ had been sold in its advance booking across three multiple chains, (INOX PVR, and Cinepolis) for Day 1, whereas the film ‘Oppenheimer’ had sold close to 1.30 lakh tickets for Day 1 across the same largest cinema hall chains.

On Friday, Barbie had a reported English occupancy rate of 41.61 per cent; during the time when ‘Oppenheimer’ was in the lead in India. According to Variety, it has already raked in a staggering $22.3 million in revenue in the United States, whereas ‘Oppenheimer’ has only made $10.5 million. It is interesting to note that while Barbie is running away with the box office in the United States, the popularity of Oppenheimer is skyrocketing in India. This is likely attributable to Christopher Nolan’s respected status as one of the best directors of his time.

Furthermore, the Christopher Nolan-directed film has not only beaten Barbie but also has apparently crossed the opening day earnings of both Fast X (12 crores) and ‘Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One’ (12.50 crores).
