New Delhi: Yorgos Lanthimos’s most recent award-winning feature, Poor Things, has already amassed two Golden Globes and five BAFTAs this year. The American Film Institute and the National Board of Review both ranked Poor Things among the best 10 films of 2023, and it also received eleven nominations for the 2024 Oscar Awards.

Plot
The film Poor Things has done a respectable job of presenting the smart and unconventional science fiction drama. Bella Baxter, the childlike ward of the eccentric and intelligent Dr. Godwin Baxter, goes through a coming-of-age story in this film. Victoria, a pregnant lady who tries to end her life by hanging herself to escape her violent husband, has her baby’s brain transplanted into her body, and the mad doctor brings her back to life.
Her guardian gives her hand in marriage to Max McCandles, her apprentice, as she learns to walk and speak like an adult. But Bella isn’t having any of it, so she runs away with a drunken lawyer named Duncan.
While adventuring across continents with Duncan, Bella encounters an alternative Victorian-futuristic world. She experiences exploitation, education, and surprise at every turn. Eventually, she gains enough knowledge about herself and the world to strike out on her own. The film presents a realistic and critical perspective, offering a tragic and peculiar comedy that is also reflective.
When and Where to Watch?
After its world debut on September 1, 2023, at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, Poor Things went on to win the Golden Lion. It had a successful theatrical debut in the US on December 8, 2023, and in the UK on January 12, 2024.
February 27, 2024, is the date set for the film’s OTT premiere. Eventually, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video will carry Poor Things.
