The novel was written by Gustave Flaubert in 1857.There have been multiple Hollywood adaptations of this novel. However in India, Ketan Mehta was the one who adapted it and made “Maya Memsahab” based on it.
The film follows the life of Maya who is a young, beautiful, and bored housewife. Her husband’s character is played by Farooq Sheikh. Shahrukh Khan plays the character of Lalit Kumar who comes as a new resident in the same area where Maya resides. Soon, they are attracted towards each other which turns into a steamy affair. During the course of this affair, they end up making love with each other.But soon Maya’s affair with Lalit turns into a disaster and Maya disappears.Though the film had really beautiful music and a great aesthetic but audience remembers the film for its controversial sex scene.
Shahrukh Khan had signed “Maya Memsaab” while he was just starting in ,Bollywood but the film was released in 1993 when Shahrukh had already become a star with movies like “Deewana” and “Baazigar”.“Maya Memsaab” turned out to be a disaster at the box office but it received a special mention at the 1993 national awards.
In nutshell, Maya Memsaab was a good retelling of the classic novel Madame Bovary with some amazing performances and superb music. Unfortunately, the film got bogged by the unnecessary nude scene controversy and the audience didn’t see it the way it was intended to.Thirty years down the line another superstar Ranbir Kapoor with actress Tripti Dimri has created furore with their lovemaking scene.
