New Delhi: Shaakuntalam, the much-awaited film starring talented actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu, was released in theatres on Friday (April 14). Fans were anticipating her performance as Shakuntala in Gunasekhar’s legendary drama with bated breath. In addition to her, Mohan Babu, Allu Arha, Aditi Balan, Gautami, Sachin Khedekar, and Ananya Nagalla play important parts in the film.

The movie started slowly, and early trends indicate that it would make barely Rs 5 crore on day one at the box office. Shaakuntalam has a large number of screens in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada and is predicted to have a successful opening weekend. Since the trailer was released, there has been a lot of talk among the public because the film is based on Kalidasa’s legendary drama Shakuntala.

For those who are unaware, the film stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan. The Pan-Indian mythical romance drama is based on Kalidasa’s classic play Shakuntala. Shakuntala is King Dushyant’s wife and Emperor Bharata’s mother. When King Dushyant goes on a hunting excursion in the bush, he encounters Shakuntala. They fell in love and married according to the Gandharva method.

Samantha recently told in an interview about the film, “It’s a love story. And love is a cosmos unto itself. Our cultural legacy is extensive. And the plot of this picture is based on one of our most beloved masterpieces. Aside from the premise, the film has high-quality visuals and amazing effects.”

Samantha had already discussed the film’s budget with us in an interview. “The main element is that producers should have the belief to mount a project on this scale with a girl at the centre of it,” she explained, “and I think that by itself is an incredible accomplishment to me because this is perhaps the biggest budget in the South for a female lead movie.”
