Plot
In Stolen, we see a world where xenophobia is at an all-time high, reindeer herds are in jeopardy due to climate change, and young people, overwhelmed by despair, would rather take their own lives. As a cultural minority in Sweden, the Sami have persevered through centuries of colonization by modernization and industry, all the while clinging to their ancient ways of life.
Hundreds of reindeer are being injured, tormented, and slaughtered for profit, convenience, and vengeance by non-Sami and, eventually, even Sami people.
The protagonist, Elsa, is a young girl from an Arctic community who, tragically, watches as a hunter slaughters a reindeer calf that belongs to her family. While everyone else tries to identify the hunter, she finds solace in quiet since she cannot lie.
Despite its genre as a thriller, Stolen is an emotionally wrenching and disturbing reminder of the discrimination that Sami people endure at the hands of both the government and non-Sami residents.
When and Where to Watch?
On April 12, 2024, Stolen will be available to watch on Netflix. Amid widespread animal cruelty and hatred, one indigenous young lady fights for the survival of her culture in the film Stolen.
