New Delhi: “Taali” directed by Ravi Jadhav is set to release on Independence Day. The series tells the story of Shreegauri Sawant, a transgender activist, and features Sushmita Sen in a remarkable and never-seen-before role. You can catch the series on JioCinema starting August 15.

The series is created by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar, with direction by acclaimed filmmaker Ravi Jadhav. Kshitij Patwardhan has penned the script. The production is handled by Arjun Singgh Baran, Kartk D Nishandar (GSEAMS Production), and Afeefa Nadiadwala. “Taali” aims to shed light on Shreegauri Sawant’s unwavering dedication to gaining recognition and acceptance for the third gender in India.

In the Taali teaser, Sushmita Sen portrays Shreegauri Sawant and introduces herself by the various names she is called, including Hijra, social worker, nautanki, and game changer. The story revolves around Shreegauri’s journey from facing challenges to achieving success. Sushmita, as Shreegauri, emphasizes the importance of embracing one’s true identity and not being afraid to show it.

The teaser showcases powerful moments, such as Shreegauri being bathed, attending college disguised as a man, and confidently asserting her desires for self-respect, dignity, and freedom. The teaser ends with Shreegauri standing in front of a court and asked if she is ready to proceed, to which she responds confidently, “Since childhood,” while fearlessly stepping forward despite the police baton.

Shreegauri Sawant

Born in Pune, Shreegauri took a courageous step in her teenage years by leaving her home to avoid disappointing her father, who was a police officer. In 2000, she went on to establish the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust, an NGO dedicated to offering counseling services for the transgender community and advocating for safe sex practices. Shreegauri made history in 2014 as the first transgender activist to file a petition in the Supreme Court, fighting for adoption rights for transgender individuals. Her efforts were instrumental in the landmark case where the Supreme Court officially recognized transgender as the third gender.
