Plot
Judith Potts is a fiercely independent, eccentric, and intelligent 77-year-old woman who has lived alone since her husband’s passing. She spends her time swimming in the Thames, drinking whisky, and creating crossword puzzles for a national newspaper.
Unlike most elderly protagonists in cozy mysteries, Judith is neither frail nor eager for companionship. She enjoys her solitude and thrives in it.
One evening, while enjoying a swim near her home, Judith hears a gunshot from the other side of the river. Concerned, she reports it to the police. Yet they dismiss her claim due to a lack of evidence. When she investigates further, she stumbles upon the body of her neighbor, Stefan Dunwoody. He has been shot in his own home.
DCI Tanika Malik leads the police, who hesitate to treat it as anything other than a robbery gone wrong, but Judith remains unconvinced. Her keen observational skills tell her that something more sinister is at play. Determined to solve the mystery, she takes matters into her own hands.
As Judith digs deeper into the crime, she unexpectedly joins forces with two other women from Marlow, Becks Starling and Suzie Harris.
As they dig deeper, more bodies turn up. Each death seemingly connected to a tangled web of secrets, blackmail, and long-held grudges in Marlow. Judith and her new allies must navigate a town full of potential suspects. They come across cryptic clues and hidden motivations.
The more they uncover, the clearer it becomes that someone in Marlow is willing to kill to keep their secrets buried.
