Plot

The Rising of the Shield Hero is a gripping fantasy anime that follows the turbulent journey of Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary Japanese college student who finds himself summoned to a parallel universe. In this unfamiliar realm, he learns that he has been chosen as one of four legendary heroes, each equipped with a unique weapon and entrusted with the fate of the world. While the other three heroes are granted powerful offensive weapons—a sword, a spear, and a bow—Naofumi is given the Shield, a purely defensive item that significantly limits his ability to attack or lead on the battlefield.

Initially, Naofumi’s perceived lack of strength causes him to be looked down upon by the kingdom and even ridiculed by his fellow heroes. The situation worsens when he is falsely accused of a heinous crime by the only party member who agreed to join him. Overnight, Naofumi’s reputation is destroyed, leaving him isolated, scorned by the people, and forced to fend for himself in a world that has turned against him.

Despite these overwhelming odds, Naofumi refuses to give in. With a hardened heart and a growing mistrust of others, he begins to forge his own path—learning to harness the unique strengths of the Shield, taming monsters, and eventually forming a new party with Raphtalia, a demi-human slave girl, and Filo, a magical bird creature.
