The Room Next Door OTT Release: Pedro Almodóvar’s 2024 film, The Room Next Door, marks the acclaimed Spanish director’s first English-language feature, bringing together the formidable talents of Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

The film will be released as a series on Amazon Video on the 17th of March, 2025. 

A Sudden Reunion

The story begins when Martha. She is a former war correspondent who has spent her life reporting from conflict zones. Martha is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Rather than seeking treatment, she chooses to spend her final months in a serene coastal town in Spain. The same place she grew up at.

However, she is not alone—she reaches out to Ingrid, now a reclusive but renowned writer. Ingrid was also her childhood friend. Martha invites her to visit for one last reunion.

Despite years of silence between them, Ingrid hesitantly accepts the invitation. She doesn’t fully understand why Martha has reached out to her after all this time. As she arrives at the picturesque villa Martha has rented by the sea, she finds herself stepping into a deeply intimate and emotionally charged situation.

Confronting the Past

As the two women spend time together, they begin to unravel the wounds of their past. Their friendship had once been filled with youthful dreams, shared laughter, and an unspoken bond, but life had pulled them apart. The film skillfully interweaves flashbacks from their youth with the present-day conversations, revealing a heartbreakingly tender connection that had been lost along the way.

Martha, knowing her time is limited, urges Ingrid to be honest about why they drifted apart. Did Ingrid resent Martha’s reckless ambition? Did Martha feel abandoned when Ingrid retreated into her writing? The weight of these unspoken emotions hovers between them, creating moments of raw vulnerability and profound tenderness.

The film garnered significant acclaim, premiering at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2024, where it received a nearly 20-minute standing ovation—the longest at the festival that year.

Almodóvar’s direction, combined with the powerful performances of Swinton and Moore, led to The Room Next Door winning the prestigious Golden Lion, a first for a Spanish film.

The Room Nex Door had its theatrical release in Spain on October 18, 2024. A limited U.S. release on December 20, 2024, the film is now set for its digital debut.
