New Delhi: Fans have been clamouring for a second season of Uncanny Counter ever since the first one ended over three years ago, and even more so now that the last few episodes hinted at So Mun’s development. The second season of the Korean drama, which fans have eagerly awaited, has started premiering on Netflix today, July 29.

Plot

The programme is based on a webtoon that has been running in serial form on many websites since 2018. The Counters, selected from among those who have suffered tremendous loss or been close to death, continue to play a vital role in the story as they strive to safeguard the helpless from evil spirits. Demons from beyond the grave come to Earth to gain immortality.

Review

Season 2 of The Uncanny Counter follows up on the first season with another compelling narrative. This series strikes the perfect mix between action set pieces and character growth, giving equal screen time to each member of the Counter squad.

Cho Byeong Kyu does a fantastic job reviving the character So Moon, while Yoo Joon Sang’s darkly charming performance as Ga Mo Tak is a welcome addition to the series. The character of Do Ha Na, played by Kim Se Jeong, brings something fresh to the team of Counters. Similarly, Yeom Hye Ran enchants as the healer Chue Mae Ok with her powerful performance.

The story as a whole is nonetheless interesting, pulling audiences farther into the realm of spirits and wars between the heavenly and the mortal. The narrative gains emotional weight as So Moon’s quest to learn the truth about his parents’ deaths takes centre stage. The series’s ability to include otherworldly themes while yet being grounded in human experience is impressive.

The Uncanny Counter 2 is an excellent continuation of the series because of its compelling plot, excellent acting, and satisfying mix of action, mystery, and passion. For anyone interested in the supernatural or a well-made drama with an original theme, this is an absolute must-see.
