The Waking of a Nation OTT Release: The Waking of a Nation is an upcoming historical drama series directed by Ram Madhvani, set to premiere on SonyLIV on March 7, 2025.

The series delves into the events surrounding the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of April 13, 1919, and the subsequent Hunter Commission inquiry. It aims to shed light on the lesser-known conspiracies and the broader impact of colonialism during that period.

The Waking of a Nation will soon be premiering on the streaming site SonyLiv on the 7th of March, 2025.

Plot

The story begins in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, in early 1919, as British rule tightens its grip on India. The recently passed Rowlatt Act, which grants the British government sweeping powers to imprison Indians without trial, has sparked widespread unrest.

People from various backgrounds—including freedom fighters, students, traders, and intellectuals begin mobilizing protests against this oppressive law.

At the heart of the movement is Kantilal Sahni. He is a young and passionate lawyer who believes in using the legal system to challenge British rule. His father, Haridas Sahni, is a respected doctor who treats both British officers and Indian revolutionaries in secret.

Kantilal’s best friend, Jasbir is a fiery revolutionary. He believes that peaceful resistance alone will not be enough to achieve freedom. Meanwhile, Meera is a journalist and Kantilal’s love interest. She is determined to expose the truth about British oppression through her writing.

On April 13, 1919, the day of Baisakhi, thousands of unarmed civilians—men, women, and children—gather at Jallianwala Bagh, walled garden. They are only there to protest peacefully. The gathering consists of people unaware of Dyer’s martial law order.

Alongside are activists who see it as an opportunity to resist British rule.

Without warning, General Dyer arrives with a battalion of soldiers, blocking the only exit. He gives the command to fire indiscriminately into the crowd. The assault continues until hundreds lie dead or wounded.

Refusing to let the massacre be forgotten, Kantilal joins the legal team challenging Dyer’s actions before the Hunter Commission, the British-led inquiry into the incident.

The Waking of a Nation is more than just a historical retelling. It’s a reflection on oppression, resistance, and the price of freedom.
