Santoor maestro Shiv Kumar Sharma composed music for these 5 iconic Bollywood songs, with Hariprasad Chaurasia

Sharma played the stringed instrument uniquely which embellished musical pieces by adding melodious texture to them.

New Delhi: The world of music lost another musician, the renowned santoor player Pt Shivkumar Sharma. The instrumentalist brought the stringed instrument to the global stage and successfully ruled classical as well as film music. Shivkumar Sharma breathed his last on May 10 following a heart attack. He was 84.

Sharma played the stringed instrument uniquely which embellished musical pieces by adding melodious texture to them. Apart from classical, Sharma’s contribution to Bollywood music is something to be talked about. Along with flutist Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Sharma created some evergreen Bollywood music. Here are some:

1. Dekha ek khwab – Silsila

The popular song from the movie Silsila starts with tunes played by santoor. Besides, before the beginning of every stanza, santoor is played. The semi-classical soundscape along with Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar’s voices has made the song audience’s favourite.

2. Rang Barse – Silsila

This is one of the most popular songs Bollywood music has on its playlist. This is also a must-play Holi song starring legendary Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha amongst others. The tune and infectious rhythms make it a perfect song celebrating the vibrancy of colours.

3. Mere Haathon Mein – Chandni

Sridevi-starrer film featuring this song is full of emotions. The actress gracefully danced apart from being sensuous and playful at times. Besides, we get to hear multiple uses of percussions in this vibrant song.

4. Kabhi Mein Kahoon – Lamhe

Pt Shivkumar and Hariprasad teamed up and created a magical, immortal number – Kabhi Mein Kahoon. The song was sung by Hariharan and Lata Mangeshkar and talked about lovers pledging their hearts to each other. The song featured Sridevi and Anil Kapoor.

5. Tu Mere Saamne – Daar

Shiv-Hari’s composition ‘Tu Mere Saamne’ was another major hit with Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan contributing their voice. The song talked about attraction and its repercussions. The soft, subtle music with santoor enhancing it more, made the song an evergreen one.
