Trial Period Review: “It’s Backwash; no magical”, netizens ‘divided’ on family drama

Genelia portrays Ana, a single mother whose life takes an unexpected turn when her curious kid asks to try out a father for a month.

New Delhi: Jio Studios and Chrome Pictures’ new film, Trial Period, premieres today, July 21, 2023. The touching story of an unconventional family relationship is at the core of the film, directed by Aleya Sen. Genelia Deshmukh and Manav Kaul front up a stellar ensemble that also co-starred by Shakti Kapoor, Gajraj Rao, Sheeba Chadda, and Zidane Braz.

Plot & Review

Genelia portrays Ana, a single mother whose life takes an unexpected turn when her curious kid asks to try out a father for a month. In answer to this benign inquiry, Manav’s Prajapati Dwivedi (PD) character appears. Ana and her kid quickly learn that the strict Ujjain native Prajapati is nothing that they had anticipated. The film follows the characters as they discover love and friendship while facing obstacles such as a dysfunctional family and a clash of personalities.

A slice-of-life, family story with a healthy dose of drama, comedy, and passion is what you can expect from Trial Period. It’s a moving and insightful trip that shows the complexity and love in today’s families. This plot summary has all the makings of a feel-good tale. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the visual representation of the movie. So, a mix reaction among the viewers can be found.

Having Genelia D’Souza make an appearance in a film again is a plus point. Despite the story’s flaws, she gives a sincere performance that wins you over. Manav Kaul’s brilliant acting rescues the film from its underdeveloped narrative. As a small-town man with his own eccentricities, he is fantastic.

The film is a pure family drama that offers a lot more than simply a good time at the movies. The score was written specifically for the picture and succeeds in setting the right tone. The complexities and beauty of interpersonal relationships are thoroughly addressed. But just when Trial Period seems to be running out of key conflicts and falling prey to predictable tropes, it begins exploring some very common themes, such as the anguish of single parents, their mental and communication gap with their children, jealousy, and more. The picture suffers from a number of cliches and moments of predictability. The first part of the film may have benefited from a tighter script but in the meantime, it started to become predictable and lose its interesting narratives.
