AAP’s list of RS picks from Punjab includes Environmentalist & social activist, both Padma awardees

With nomination of two Padma Shri awardees, the AAP has sought to reinforce its claim that the party’s first & foremost priority is bringing honest & upright people into politics.

New Delhi: Aiming to bolster its claims of a party with clean conscience & governance, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has zeroed in 2 nominees, both of high prominence in society and known for their social work, for election to the Upper House.

The 2 Rajya Sabha picks of Punjab’s ruling party are environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal and social activist Vikramjit Singh Sahney. Both AAP nominees are Padma Shri awardees.

Tweeting the information about nomination of its RS picks, CM Bhagwant Mann tweeted, “Aam Aadmi Party is nominating two Padma Shri awardees as members of the Rajya Sabha…one environment lover Padma Shri Sant Balbir Singh Seenchewal, the other Padma Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahni is related to Punjabi culture…my best wishes to both.”

With nomination of two Padma Shri awardees, the AAP has sought to reinforce its claim that the party’s first & foremost priority is bringing honest & upright people into politics. Just days ago, Punjab CM removed cabinet minister as his name got embroiled in bribery charges.

The Rajya Sabha polls from Rajya Sabha have been necessitated because of expiry of terms of Cong MP Ambika Soni & SAD MP Balwinder Singh Bhunder on July 4.

About 2 AAP nominees

Balbir Singh Seenchewal is a social worker and a renowned environmentalist. He was honoured with Padma Shri for rejuvenating the 160 km-long-long tributaries of the Satluj and Beas rivers. His contribution was acknowledged & admired by late president APJ Abdul Kalam, who visited him the environmental twice at his village.

Vikramjit Singh Sahney is an entrepreneur by profession and also pursues philanthropy. His notable work includes evacuation of 500 Hindus and Sikhs from Afghanistan by sending 3 chartered flights and rehabilitating while providing free education to their children.

If they are elected on AAP ticket, the party’s tally will increase in the Upper House substantially, with 5 AAP nominees already making it to RS from Punjab earlier.

In March, 5 AAP nominees were were elected unopposed from Punjab includes Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Lovely Professional University Chancellor Ashok Mittal, and industrialist Sanjeev Arora.
