AMU professor in soup over hurting religious sentiment during lecture

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is again in the eye of storm over a raging controversy related to its assistant professor’s controversial statement.

New Delhi: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is again in the eye of storm over a raging controversy related to its assistant professor’s controversial statement.

An Assistant professor at the AMU reportedly made disparaging remarks against Hindu deities while giving a lecture in the class. The professor has been suspended and a case lodged against him for making derogatory remarks against Hindu gods.

Dr Jitendra Kumar, who works at JN Medical college, attached to the AMU, was teaching about sexual offence in the classroom. While making a power point presentation, he was summarizing about history of rape.

It was then he made indecent reference and reportedly linked rape to Hindu deities.

He was booked by the police and a case lodged against him at the Civil lines police station in connection with ‘incendiary content’ of his presentation during the class.

Based on a complaint from Dr Nishesh Sharma, an FIR was lodged against him under several IPC sections. Later the professor also issued an “unconditional apology”.

Briefing about the action, Shafe Kidwai, in-charge of Public Relations at AMU told media, “He has been asked to submit a reply explaining his behavior. Meanwhile, we have suspended him.”

According to an AMU official, the assistant professor while eliciting views on subject of rape on Tuesday, referred to some Hindu gods, in particular Lord Brahma and Lord Indra. It was when students raised objection against his linking the subject to Hindu gods that the matter came to light and action followed.
