New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam remains grim and serious at many places including ike Silchar, Cachar and Karimganj are still inundated with huge influx of water.

While the Army, NDRF and SDRF have been pressed into service and are carrying out relief & rescue operation on a war footing, some social & humanitarian groups are have also chipped in with their voluntary service in mitigating their losses & pain.

The activists & volunteers of Rashtriya Swayamseval Sangh (RSS) are leading from the front in carrying out relief works at flood-hit regions. They are providing food & drinking water at places to people, stranded in different locations due to floods. The RSS Swayamsevaks can be seen in pictures ferrying basic essentials to cut-off locations in Cachar & Karimganj districts of Assam.

Not just the Sangh volunteers but school children of Saraswati Vidya Mandir School are also taking part in the relief operation. The young students & teachers have volunteered to be part of the drive to serve the affected people and lift them out of their misery. On an average, they are reaching out to average 1000+ people, staying in relief camps and flood hit areas. The Saraswati Vidya Mandir School is part of a chain run by Vidya Bharati, an educational offshoot of the RSS.

The altruistic service by RSS men and Seva Bharati volunteers have contributed greatly in carrying out the relief operation in floot-hit regions including Silchar.

Assam CM wades through water to assess flood situation

Assam CM Himatna Sharma today waded through the flood water to take first hand account of problems faced by stranded people. The Assam CM was seen walking through knee-deep flood waters and interacting with flood-affected people.


Earlier in the day, CM Himanta held a high-level meet with cabinet colleagues and deputy Commissioners today to assess the flood situation & review rescue operation. He directed officials to ensure arrangement of baby food in relief camps. He also said that govt was mulling to airdrop essential food items in worst hit areas.

Overall, about 42 lakh people in 33 districts have been affected by floods. About 1.86 lakh people are said to be living in temporary relief camps.
