BJP tally in Rajya Sabha crosses 100, becomes 1st party to score a ton in 3 decades

For the first time, the BJP tally in Rajya Sabha has crossed the 100 mark. Since 1988, no party has had more than 100 MPs in the Upper House.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has created records of sorts in the Rajya Sabha, as the lawmakers belonging to the saffron party has touched new high in the Upper House. For the first time, the BJP tally in Rajya Sabha has crossed the 100 mark. Since 1988, no party has had more than 100 MPs in the Upper House. The total tally of BJP MPs in Rajya Sabha now stands at 101.

In the recently concluded elections for Rajya Sabha, BJP won 4 out of 13 seats, elections for which were held on Thursday. In Assam, BJP’s alliance partner United People’s Party Liberal won 1 RS seat from Assam while the saffron party wo 4 RS seats from 3 North-Eastern States – Assam, Nagaland & Tripura. With this, the share of BJP members has also increased from this region.

Elated over development, Assam CM Himanta BIswa Sarma tweeted last night, “Assam has reposed its faith in PM Sri @narendramodi ji by electing two NDA candidates to the Rajya Sabha by huge margins – BJP’s Sri Pabitra Margherita (won by 11 votes) & UPPL’s Sri Rwngwra Narzary (won by 9 votes). My compliments to winners.”

Elections for 2 Rajya Sabha seats in Assam and 1 in Tripura were held on Thursday. From Nagaland, the BJP candidate S Phangnon Konyak has become the first woman representative from the state in the Upper House.

AAP was another party to grab big share in newly elected Parliamentarians. It won 5 RS seats from Punjab, where it won 2-3rd majority. With this, AAP tally has also gone upto 8 seats. Congress tally has gone down by 5 seats.

Meanwhile, a photo-op session was held for the outgoing RS members who posed with Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu, Deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh and PM Modi & Speaker Om Birla.

The event was organise to bid farewell to the retiring members of the Upper House.
