Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu gets one year jail in 1988 road rage case

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has been awarded one year of jail in connection with a road rage case on Thursday.

New Delhi: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has been awarded one year of jail in connection with a road rage case of 1988 on Thursday. In the incident, an elderly person was killed.

Earlier in its order, the apex court had let off Sidhu after imposing a fine of Rs 1,000. However, the deceased’s family demanded strict punishment against the leader in a petition.

After hearing the petition, the top court reserved its order last month in the plea, demanding strict punishment against the Congress leader.

In his plea, Sidhu told the top court that the victim’s family is involved in a ”malicious attempt” for reopening the case.

He said there was ”no strong evidence to show that the single fist blow led to the death of a 65-year-old man”.

Notably, the case was first heard at a Session Court of Punjab’s Patiala. On September 22, 1999, Sidhu and his associate were freed by the court due to a lack of evidene.

Following this order, the victim’s kins challenged the judgment in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2006. Turning the lower court’s order, the High Court sentenced him to three years imprisonment.

However, Sidhu then approached the Supreme Court for challenging the HC’s order.
