Delhi Excise Policy Scam: Supreme Court refuses to entertain plea by Manish Sisodia concerning his arrest

Justice PS Narasimha said that just because an incident happened in Delhi does not mean the case will be taken up by the Supreme Court.

New Delhi Supreme Court denies bail to Delhi’s Deputy CM Manish Sisodia in the liquor scam case. Sisodia was arrested by CBI after eight hours of questioning as reportedly he did not cooperate in answering the questions. CJI Chandrachud suggested going for bail remedy before Delhi High Court. SC refused to entertain the case under Article 32.

Justice PS Narasimha said that just because an incident happened in Delhi does not mean the case will be taken up by the Supreme Court. CJI cited that the petitioner has ‘efficacious alternative remedies’ and should go to the High Court.

Sisodia’s lawyer, Dr. Singhvi cited the case of journalist Vinod Dua to oppose Deputy CM’s arrest, while CJI Chandrachud mentioned that this case is under the Prevention of Corruption Act and is thus different.

Dr. Singhvi agreed to withdraw the case from SC and asked the bench to direct the bail to be decided quickly.

After Sisodia’s arrest, Special Judge MK Nagpal sent him to CBI remand till March 4 for further questioning.

Sisodia was arrested on February 26 in a case where he is accused of corruption in the framing and execution of the excise policy on liquor. BJP, who is in the opposition, have also alleged that the money from the excise duty was used to fund Aam Aadmi Party’s election campaign in Goa.

Delhi is witnessing large protests by AAP workers while the party is referring the arrest as an attack on anyone who stands opposite to Centre.
