Pushkar Dhami was selected as the party’s choice for Chief Minister after days of speculation and deliberation by the BJP brass. On Monday, putting an end to suspense over all names, he was elected as the leader of BJP legislature party.

The BJP was in dilemma over picking him as the CM designate because of his electoral defeat from Khatima constituency, a set he kept winning since
2012. Dhami had lost to Congress candidate Bhuwan Chandra Kapri from Khatima by a margin of 6,579 votes.

BJP emerged victorious in Uttarakhand elections by winning 47 seats in the 70-member Assembly. Opposition Congress was restricted to mere 19 seats despite strong anti-incumbency wave in state. In 2017 elections, BJP had wo 57 seats.
