First arrest in Kapurthala lynching case, caretaker of gurudwara arrested

Kapurthala police confirmed the media that there was no sacrilege and the man was only trying to steal rotis from the rasoi. Later, Punjab Chief Minister also reiterated that no incident was sacrilege took place at the Kapurthala gurudwara.

New Delhi: Days after killing of a young man at the Kapurthala gurudwara, Punjab police have made the first arrest. Amarjeet Singh, the caretaker of gurudwara was arrested today on charges of murder & attempt to murder.

In the heart-wrenching incident, the man was beaten to death over alleged sacrilege. On Dec 19, the man was lynched in Nizampur village of Kapurthala after he allegedly tried to remove Nishan Sahib from atop the gurudwara. The gruesome incident happened at the gurdwara in Nizampur village.

The gurudwara caretaker Amarjeet Singh was detained by police on the same night itself but was released later. Amarjeet was questioned by the police as he alleged that he saw the man trying to desecrate the Nishan Sahib.

Kapurthala police confirmed the media that there was no sacrilege and the man was only trying to steal rotis from the rasoi. Later, Punjab Chief Minister also reiterated that no incident was sacrilege took place at the Kapurthala gurudwara.

“We did not find any sacrilege attempt or any evidence to back it. One person ran the gurdwara. This thing has moved to murder and inquiry is on,” Channi said.

The man, said to be mentally challenged, was brutally assaulted and murdered by some religious fanatics in name of faith. The body of unidentified man reportedly had deep cuts on his body, chest and neck.

As per post-mortem report, there were no less 30 sharp injuries on the body of unidentified man, leaving enough hints that he was attacked with sword.

The unidentified man was cremated by the local municipal corporation as nobody came forward to claim the dead body.
