‘Ghar Wapsi’ for Assam tribals in Morigaon and Karbi Anglong districts

Narayan Radu Kakoti, the chief organiser of Hindu Suraksha Samity, Assam unit, alleged that poor and innocent tribal people, living in both plains and hills districts of Assam, have become an easy target of Christian Missionaries for conversion to Christianity.

The ‘Ghar Wapsi’ (return to the fold or reconversion) ceremony aims at reconverting a section of tribal people from Christianity to their original religious belief (Hinduism). For this purpose, two religious functions were organised under the initiatives of Hindu Sukaksha Samity and Raj Poriyal (Royal family) of Gova Kingdom at West Karbi Anglong and Morigaon district respectively on February 27.

At Jagiroad in Morigaon district, the Royal family of Gova Kingdom (A Tiwa state prevalent much before Independence) organised another religious ceremony where 43 Tiwa Christian people were reconverted to Hinduism.

On the other hand, at Keyabat village in West Karbi Anglong’s Hamren sub division, under the initiative Hindu Suraksha Samity, the reconversion ceremony was held where 70 persons belonging to 11 Tiwa (read Hills Tiwa) families returned to Hinduism.

Narayan Radu Kakoti, the chief organiser of Hindu Suraksha Samity, Assam unit, alleged that poor and innocent tribal people, living in both plains and hills districts of Assam, have become an easy target of Christian Missionaries for conversion to Christianity. “The problem is quite acute in hill districts. Since 1951, Christian Missionaries and other Christian organisations have been working together to convert Hindu tribal people to Christianity. Now many tribal people have been realising their mistake and want to come back to their respective original religious beliefs. We are to protect their original religious beliefs and culture,” said Kakoti.

He added that Karbi Samaj (a socio-economic body of the Karbi tribal in West Karbi Anglong district) announced at the Koyabat village reconversion ceremony yesterday that over 100 Karbi Christians would reconvert themselves from Christianity to their original tribal religious belief very soon.

“We have been trying to unite tribal people living in the North Eastern states. We have to foil the Christian Missionaries’ evil design to convert innocent and poor tribal people to Christianity. On March 12, 2023, under the banner of Janajatiyo Suraksha Manch, a mega event will be held at Guwahati, where all the senior leaders will address the gathering. Tribal people from all the states of the NE region will participate in the meet,” Kakoti added.

Meanwhile, Hindu Suraksha Samity has set 2025 as the target year to complete their mission of reconverting Christian tribal people to their original religious belief of Hinduism in Assam
