New Delhi: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani and nine other persons have been awarded three months of jail in a case related to 2017 by a Gujarat court. It is reported that the case is related to taking out an Azadi march.

Moreover, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each convict.

In July 2017, all the convicted persons took out the rally, reportedly with necessary permission, from Mahesana to Banaskanatha. It marks one year of the Una Dalit flogging incident.

Notably, Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar also faced a separate trial against him as he was not present during the time of framing of charges. This way court ordered a separate trial against him.

Mevani awarded jail for tweet against PM Modi

The convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikari Manch, Mevani was jailed for a purported tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was arrested by the Assam police from Gujarat’s Palanpur for the tweet. However, he got bail last week from an Assam court in the case.

But, he was again arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting a woman police personnel. She was reportedly involved in the team that took Mevani to Assam’s Kokrajhar.

In the second case, Mevani was granted bail on Saturday after completing his bail formalities at the district court.

It is important to note that Mevani formally joined the Congress in 2021. Mevani, who comes from the village of Meu in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, completed a BA and LLB from Gujarat University. He has actively been involved in politics since his college days.
