In Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, fresh stone pelting from rooftops; cops targeted

Sonu Cheeka, one of the main accused of Jahangirpuri violence is on the run and police are hunting for his whereabouts.

New Delhi: Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, which became the epicentre of communal clashes during Hanuman Jayanti procession on Saturday, continues to remain on the boil. On Monday, fresh violence and stone-pelting incident was reported from the area.

A group of people pelted stones from rooftops while police team visited houses of the accused for probe. As police team took away the accused’s wife for interrogation, about 50 women from the area assembled and started protesting. They are said to have engaged in stone-pelting at the cops. Stones were also hurled from adjoining homes in the area.

The woman who was taken by Delhi police for questioning is the wife of accused Sonu Cheeka who fired gunshots during the clashes that broke out during Shobha Yatra in Jahangirpur area.

Sonu Cheeka, one of the main accused of Jahangirpuri is on the run and police are hunting for his whereabouts. According to Deputy Commission of Police, the family members of Sonu confronted the police when they went for questioning and even hurled stones at the police personnel.

The police have detained one person and currently the situation is under control.

The police has stepped up vigil and security arrangements in the area to prevent further escalation of flare-up. Women constables of Rapid Action Force (RAF) in headgears are currently deployed at the spot.

Fresh incidents of violence broke out at about 100 metres from the spot, when violence broke out during the Shobha Yatra procession on Saturday.
